The finishing accommodation comprises 2 separate sheds that were built in 1998. These are modern insulated building with a Big Pen system. Ventilation is thermostatically controlled by side curtains. The pigs are bedded daily with straw, and passages against the outside walls are scraped every four hours with an automatic scraper system. Pigs are kept in pens of 60, with one shed dedicated to boars and one to gilts. All the pigs are fed using a Meyer-Lohne liquid feed system. This is based on ad-lib feeding, with complete computer control of mixing and batching of feed. Great efforts are put in by all concerned to ensure the pigs are reared to extremely high welfare standards, and indeed all the units satisfy the requirements of the RSPCA Freedom Food standard. All the units have been inspected and accepted by the Scottish Pig Industry Initiative assurance scheme. With the pigs finding their way to Marks and Spencers, via Scotbeef, the units are also subjected to inspection under the Marks and Spencer scheme also. The finished pigs are taken by specialist lorry owned by W. Mewilliam a local contractor based at New Galloway to the abattoir at Strathaven only 35 miles away. |
